ken taylor drama education follow blog via email enter your email address to follow this blog and receive notifications of new posts by email. pages about contact drama associations links drama fountain drama on facebook idea london drama pgce drama search for: the end of an era today i decided to close my drama_uk yahoo! group. it has been running since 26 september 1998. at its height there were 2,852 members listed, although i suspect many of these were duplicates. we shared files and ideas. we supported each other through changes in curriculum and examination. we championed our subject and shared advocacy material. membership of the site was free. colleagues generously shared time and materials. i like to think it served a purpose, but time and attention have changed. so far this year there have only been 10 posts. in the whole of last year there were only 35. most colleagues have moved over to using the facebook group that martin robinson set up for drama teachers and those interested in drama education . the medium is not the message. finding a vehicle to share thoughts and lesson resources is not difficult. martin’s group and many other similar local groups like london drama continue to offer this support and distribution. with current technologies everyone can be a publisher. for me this is a problem. with so much to select from how do i judge quality? where should i spend my most precious resource, time? how do i peer over the walled gardens of the ‘paid for services’ to see if the ideas there interest me? drama teachers have always wanted to share their passion for their subject in order to improve the quality of the drama taught across the country. they have always been generous and shared resources. i suspect there may be an inverse relationship between payment and the quality of drama. i am happy to be wrong. i wonder if those resources that command a fee do so because they address a statutory requirement, while those resources that are shared without cost grow from material that is too engaging and successful to be kept in one classroom. thus, the former meeting an extrinsic need while the latter reminds us of why we teach drama. maybe i just need to accept change and welcome the financial constraint. online we are often told to be suspicious of things that are free, like gmail. if we use free products then we become the product ourselves. we give up our personal data to gain a free service. everyday online we all make small accommodations with regard to this. what information are we prepared to volunteer into an online form in order to gain new services or publishing arenas? the approach taken to the software i use is changing. in the past i paid for a program and then paid again when it was significantly upgraded. now some of the programs i value most want me to rent them. they want the income stream to be continuous. change brings new possibilities and rewards. this is a personal struggle. i am sharing my unease, but not pleading for a return to bygone times. if i consider the best productions i have seen in the last few years they have come from the personal recommendation of friends rather than reviews. so it is with drama resources. if you find something of value share this information with colleagues. i just wish i could like facebook. 2017-07-06 by ktwebs categories: die , info | 5 comments national drama cpd training for secondary teachers national drama has arranged a day of workshops and resources for confident delivery of the set text section of new spec gcses. select any two practical drama workshops from: 1. teaching mark wheeller’s plays; 2. teaching shakespeare; 3. useful approaches for all/any playtexts. lunch and refreshments included: free parking at the venue. date: friday 18th november 2016: 10am-4pm venue: nmc venue, national metalforming centre, 47 birmingham road, west bromwich b70 6py book here . 2016-09-12 by ktwebs categories: die , info | leave a comment bridging the gap this year, the natd conference will be held at warwick arts centre, coventry, cv4 7al on saturday 15th october. the focus is on providing a new way forward for process drama practices in the midst of the educational changes facing drama departments across the country. the conference will help you to bridge the gap between your educational principles and the constraints of the context within which you work. the line-up this year includes david davis, author of imagining the real , who will use the ideas contained within his book to outline a possible way forward for drama-in-education using the practices of world renowned dramatist edward bond.this keynote speech will be followed by a day of workshops that will explore what these ideas might look like in the context of the changing classroom environment. these will include workshops lead by: dr debra kidd, serial education blogger and author of teaching : notes from the front line maggie hulson (author of schemes for classroom drama ) and guy williams (former natd chair) and karen latto, drama subject specialist for ocr, who will run a workshop addressing the changing assessment at gcse and what the changes mean for the classroom teacher. see the web site for further information. 2016-09-04 by ktwebs categories: die , info | leave a comment the drama fountain samantha marsden wrote to me to let me know about a book she is writing about how to make a living as a freelance drama teacher. unlike many of the previous contacts i have received in the past sam is based in the uk and has lived and worked in london. it promises to be an interesting book. check out her drama fountain blog for further details. 2016-03-23 by ktwebs categories: die , info | 1 comment crisis or tipping point? estelle morris has written a good article in the guardian that points out the change in the landscape of teacher recruitment. the government continue to refuse to admit we have a crisis, although the one year removal of targets and the encouragement to recruit as many teachers as the ite is prepared to deal with offers its own signal. she suggests this is yet another way to demoralise the profession. i believe she is correct. recognising the recruitment crisis is only one side of the problem. there is a correlation between under-recruitment and demoralisation in the workforce. the gamble now is that the market will determine allocation. besides under-supply this may lead to over-supply. candidates paying fees for a course, undertaking it, but never finding a post because there are too few available. predictably this open market does not have the same impact on all subjects. those applying for maths and science qualify for a bursary; those wanting to teach drama do not. how many maths and science applicants will take the bursary yet fail to take up a post? how will this compare with drama applicants paying their own way into a profession they are eager to join only to find no vacancies? the teaching profession has attempted to bend and adapt to the various demands of education ministers. like most materials that bend there will be a point beyond which recovery is not possible. 2015-10-28 by ktwebs categories: die , info | 1 comment perfect storm continues government advisers seem to be queuing up to explain why there is a teacher shortage and either disclaim responsibility for creating it or suggest they predicted it. professor john howson writing in the guardian claims that he warned the next teacher recruitment crisis would appear by 2014. his immediate concern is that the government is admitting that there is a problem but refusing to see this as the crisis it really is. sam freedman, director of teachfirst and former advisor to michael gove, ‘has urged the government to scrap tuition fees for trainee teachers and to tear up the current school direct application process, in a bid to increase teacher numbers.’ he points out in schools week that ‘research by the institute for fiscal studies showed that loans for pgces would “almost never” be paid back – unless teachers become headteachers or left the profession’. remember, academies and free schools are not restricted to recruiting qualified staff. will the current shortage lead to a reduction in quality? or will class sizes, especially in secondary, get larger. i suspect the answer is both. it seems the chinese-style of maths lessons is to be expanded. maybe part of the attraction here is that the teaching approaching makes larger class sizes possible. when the government turns to china, finland, sweden or any other model of practice the focus is usually the way lessons are organised and taught. it is as if they have completely missed the status that these teachers have. education is valued by both parents and learners. there is a realisation that education offers a way to become the person you want to be. consequently teachers are supported and valued. learners are motivated and engaged because they see the opportunities that learning offers. until education regains its purpose i cannot see a recovery from this crisis. 2015-09-13 by ktwebs categories: die , info | leave a comment another perfect storm as schools start to return for a new academic year figures start to be released showing a shortfall in recruitment to teacher education places by 10%. this is the third year in a row that this has been the case and again a ‘ perfect storm ‘ of events that has been blamed. as birth rates are known in advance and as recruitment numbers are tightly constrained by the department for education it is hard to see why this might have happened … until you reflect upon the school direct system and the impossible situation that schools were placed in. before schools were made responsible for recruiting their own sd students the system generally produced a stable workforce (although certain subject areas were always hard to recruit to). the government worked to national statistics and its own teacher supply model . there is a census of recruitment numbers since 2010 here . so what is the response to the current situation? allow school direct lead schools and ite providers to recruit as many students as they want to! that is correct; no cap at all. the guidance is here . the government is unable to confirm which subjects will attract funding for the 2016 to 2017 academic year until october 2015, although, as now, it is unlikely that drama will make the list. so anyone wishing to teach drama will continue to pay their own fees and their own maintenance. the suggestion is that this is for one year only. if this is the case how can ite institutions plan their staffing? is it responsible to ask students to pay £9,000 (or more) to study to become a teacher with no safeguard about the potential recruitment situation at the end of the year? why is there a national college for teaching and leadership ? it is an executive agency that aims to, ‘ improve the quality of the education and early years workforce and help schools to help each other improve.’ the first two stated responsibilities are: ensuring that enough high quality trainees enter teacher training and early years teacher training to meet the needs of the sector managing the allocation of teacher training places and related funding to schools and universities who provide teacher training in terms of planning then this agency has decided to allow school direct lead schools and itt providers to recruit as many students as they want to for 2016 to 2017 up to the national target. what could possibly go wrong?
